London Eating: The Mayfair Chippy, Mayfair

June 2019

I took my leftover home and the brown bag was still spotless – amazing

The sun is finally out in London. It was time for a good food takeaway picnic.

The Mayfair Chippy is located in… well, Mayfair in London. Just off Oxford street near Selfridges and really easy to reach. As the name suggests, they are a Fish & Chips restaurant and do both eat-in and takeaway. There are more options in the restaurant menu, but if you’re just after a good old Fish & Chips, you can save some ££ with takeaway.

We arrived at the restaurant at around 5PM on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Too late for lunch, too early for dinner, but the small restaurant was packed full of people and really busy. The person taking our order was constantly on the phone (taking reservations) which lead to our food sitting on the counter a little longer than it should have, before we could pick it up. She seemed a little over-stretched… We did not mind waiting outside as we were politely asked to do.

C and I both went for ‘Mayfair Classic’, meaning Fish & Chips with mushy peas and 2 sauces which costs £16.50 at the restaurant. We paid £11.50 (£10 for ‘vegan fillet’) for takeaway, no service charge was added. Portion size looked exactly the same as eat-in.

The food arrived quickly and came in a large sturdy box. With our food, we headed to Grosvenor square. Grosvenor square is a small park located only a couple of minutes away from the restaurant.

C is quite experienced in Fish & Chips eating and he said, and I quote: ‘Fish(cod); flakey and tasty – seasoned just right, allowing it to taste of the fish it is. Batter: thin, crispy and intact (= fish was coated all over, with no holes that would have let the oil get to the fish)’.

I had a ‘vegan fillet’, a fried fillet of tofu, jackfruit and lemon. The thin and crispy batter was seasoned well and just perfect and I absolutely loved it. The filling was nice, but I would’ve liked it more if it was less sour and less crumbly. It was too difficult to eat as it just crumbled and fell apart.

The mushy pea was good and tartar sauce was creamy and tasty. Vegan fillet comes with vegan tartar which, to me, tasted exactly like normal tartar. The curry sauce was fragrant and flavoursome and its subtlety was just right to bind all other components on the plate (in the box) together. The chips were fluffy, creamy, sweet, fresh and not greasy – really, very good.

Not much we can say about service as we didn’t eat at the restaurant, but I like the way they take care of vegetarians and vegans and offer a fair amount of discount for takeaway. I thought the takeaway box was well thought out: sturdy, easy to eat from and no oil/sauce leak whatsoever. In fact, I took my leftover home and the brown bag was still spotless – amazing.
