Japan Itineraries

2 weeks in Hokkaido with the Japan Rail Pass (2018)

We explored Hokkaido Japan with the Japan rail pass (aka: JR pass) in the Summer of 2018. The JR pass allows you to travel with almost all JR trains including some bullet (shinkansen) trains in Japan. We bought 14 day passes (£304). Considering that the returning shinkansen train journey between Tokyo and Hakodate (Hokkaido) alone could easily cost around £300, it was worth the money.

Our journey started in Tokyo. We visited Morioka for the ‘wanko-soba’ food challenge on our way North to Sapporo. We then visited Sapporo, Otaru, Kushiro, Abashiri, Asahikawa, Biei and Hakodate + a quick stop at Echigo-Yuzawa for sake tasting and a giant rice ball before returning back to Tokyo.

I’ll share our 2 week itinerary here and hope it’ll help you when planning your own railway journey to and around Hokkaido. The above link leads to Part One of a Two Part series. Enjoy!

2 weeks in Kyushu with the Japan Rail Pass (2019)

In the Summer of 2019, we explored Kyushu Japan with the JR pass. We bought 14 day passes (£339 per person).

This time we flew into Fukuoka (Kyushu) from Germany. We visited Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima and Beppu. We visited Kyoto and stayed for 4 nights before going to Tokyo.

I’ll share our 2 week itinerary here and hope it’ll help you when planning your own railway journey to and around Kyushu. The above link leads to Part One of a Six Part series. Aligato-gozaimas!
